I was a bit taken back when, Julie, an associate stated that those with sick minds or spirits, referring to those with mental illnesses, are sick mainly because of poor choices. I didn’t immediately know how to respond to her belief, but the first chance I got, I wrote this blog post to present unique documentation on why people get sick.
Why people get sick
It is given that everyone experiences sickness. It is also a given that it is impossible to identify all the reasons why people get sick. However, it may be possible to determine poor choices that were made leading to illness. And on the other hand, it may also be possible to identify “no-fault” reasons associated with sickness.
Temporal or Spiritual?
I am among those who believe all things, both temporal and spiritual, are spiritual as explained in the following scripture.
Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal.
T&C 9:10
If ALL things are spiritual, then ALL temporal problems are SPIRITUAL problems. Therefore, because ALL men have problems, we ALL deal with spiritual ailments and are in need of being healed by the light of God.
Three Examples
Let’s explore three different true-life experiences related to illness in an effort to further understand why people get sick.
Cancer Example
Let’s explore my cousin who died of cancer at age 52. Like most, she really wanted to get well. She tried different healing methods that weren’t successful. The colon cancer was quite advanced because it went undiagnosed for too long. There was something deeper causing the colon cancer that needed to be addressed, but like many, she died because no one could figure out the root cause. Like my cousin, if we can’t figure out how to tap into God’s light to heal us, we too will die of some type of “spiritual” illness (remember if all things are spiritual, all illnesses are spiritual illnesses).
Mental Illness Example
Let’s explore those who become mentally ill after birth. The brain, an organ in the physical body works with the mind, which scientists and medical researchers believe is located in spiritual space outside the physical body. When the brain doesn’t function properly, this is a physical malfunction. However, this particular physical malfunction filters over causing communication problems with the mind (most likely located in spiritual space). Therefore, the affected individual also becomes mentally ill.
I learned in my mental health classes that many of those with brain processing disorders lose the ability to make good decisions, and the ability to converse in a socially acceptable manner because social filters disappear. Additionally, they deal with the side effects from strong drugs to control the illness. I have witnessed all three of these issues in my son who lives with Bipolar II disorder.
As I observe my son, he recognizes he is dealing with mental challenges and that he isn’t the same as he used to be. He desperately desires to be fully healed so he can enjoy a full and productive life, but he doesn’t know how to completely fix the root problems that cause his brain to malfunction so he depends on others to help him.
Intellectual Disability Example
The last example I would like to present is my niece who had a baby girl that was born intellectually disabled. She can’t take care of herself and she does not have the capacity to make life decisions or to determine how to improve her health. She is completely dependent on others to help her.
Cancer Consideration of why people get sick
- Did my cousin get cancer because she made some poor choices? Possibly
- Could some of the choices my cousin made be pinpointed that may have led to cancer? Possibly
Mental Illness Consideration of why people get sick
- Does my son live with Bipolar II disorder because he made some poor choices? Possibly
- Could some of the choices my son has made be pinpointed that may have led to Bipolar II disorder? Possibly.
- Is it possible the choices my son may have made are because he lost his capacity to make good sound decisions and process his thoughts properly? Possibly
- Can we accurately determine if those who have mental disorders (sometimes diagnosed, sometimes undiagnosed) are fully accountable for their choices? …..
God is the only one with perfect knowledge to accurately determine how the thoughts of an individual with mental illness are being processed. Therefore, God is the only one who can determine accountability accurately; I am not insinuating that those who live with mental illness should be exempt from obeying laws and any accountability. I am just making the point that God is the only one who can accurately judge the thoughts of those with mental disorders, or for that matter, ANY person.
Intellectual Disability Consideration of why people get sick
Did my niece’s little girl born with an intellectual disability make poor choices that caused her to be born unhealthy? The following scripture teaches us that we had free agency in heaven before we came to earth.
And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him, We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell. And we will prove them herewith to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them. And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon, and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever.
Abr. 6:2
I believe God has never forced any person and that he has always given everyone their free agency. However, the choices you made before you came to earth are affecting you now and may even at times take precedence over your current free agency. See my blog post titled, “Premortal Free Agency” if you would like to consider this subject further.
Due to this knowledge, it makes sense that my niece’s little girl chose to be intellectually disabled in the present physical earth world.
Why would someone choose a life where they do not have the ability to make decisions and live independently?
- a. Possibly to gain experience and knowledge in order to progress and become more empathetic
- b. Possibly to give others around them the opportunity to serve to increase their Godlike attributes
- c. Possibly those who made this choice before coming to earth understood they would be dealing with a temporary “spiritual” illness that would be healed after they have gained the desired experience.
Temporary “Spiritual” Illness Consideration
Is it possible why people get sick throughout their life on earth after they are born also made the decision before coming to the earth to accept temporary “spiritual” illness challenges to gain more experience and knowledge to further their progression? Yes, that could be possible.
Blind Man – Parent’s fault or the blind man’s fault
In the New Testament, some of Jesus’ disciples asked why the blind man was blind. They thought it was either because of his parents’ sins or his own sins. Jesus let them know it was neither. It was so Jesus could show his power to make him whole.
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
John 9:1-3
It is a good reminder that illness is always an opportunity for faith to be exercised and for God to display His power.
Conclusion – Why People Get Sick
I extend you the invitation to join me in being more cautious about judging why people get sick but rather reflect upon yourself to assess your own spiritual ailments striving to determine the steps to be taken to be healed.
