What American but no electric clothes dryer? Why?
I spent a year and a half in Volgograd, Russia on a youth service mission. I noticed the Russian’s did fine without electric clothes dryers which gave me a desire to try living dryer free when I returned home to America. Although some hassle me about living ancient ways, I have learned to smile and love it when people say something like, “What American but no electric clothes dryer?”
No Dryer Sheets
I have been “dryer sheets” free for many years because I believed they contained fragrances and chemicals that were not healthy. A good friend of mine became very sick and underwent many tests. It was discovered she had developed a resistance to many chemicals but the number one problem turned out to be an adverse reaction to the chemicals in dryer sheets.
Coating left behind on linens, clothing, and towels
When I used dryer sheets, I could feel a coating was left behind on my linens, clothing, and towels which I believed made the various materials unsafe to place next to the body especially the skin and respiratory system. Hex Performance.com explains how dryer sheets work:
How do dryer sheets work? It’s simple: they apply a coating of fabric softener onto your fabrics while the dryer is hot. That coating bakes onto the fabric. Dryer sheets give you a softer touch, prevent static, and clog the fibers of your clothes. Hex Performance.com
How I dry my clothes
I use a clothes dryer rack like the Russians use. I was so happy Amazon had it because it wasn’t available locally. I also use an old-fashioned outdoor clothesline. I remember my mom would repeatedly say, “The sun is the best disinfectant there is.” I love these methods of drying clothes because:
- It doesn’t heat up my home
- It saves electricity and money
- It is better for the environment
- It is better for my family’s health
I also skip the fabric softener even though I don’t use dryer sheets
Ann Marie suggests using vinegar as a fabric softener replacement, however, I choose to completely skip fabric softeners. I simply don’t care for the smell of vinegar or for the chemicals in fabric softeners.

No Stain Removers
While I am sharing my laundry methods, I wanted to mention that I don’t use stain removers either. Similar to Ann Marie*, I use baking soda and water mixed to a paste consistency to pretreat spots and stains. That works over 90% of the time, but if I need something stronger, I pour liquid detergent on the spot and then leave it to soak in a bowl of water overnight which has worked wonderfully for many years.
*Naturally remove stains: Instead of using chemical-laden stain removers, simply pre-treat your stain with a combination of washing soda, baking soda, and water. Ann Marie Skin Care
What American but no electric clothes dryer or fabric softener? Yep, and I love it. I am glad I went to Russia and discovered I can function perfectly fine with no electric clothes dryer.
