I recently learned that hamburger calories vary greatly. Some are not as healthy as they sound. I decided to study more about hamburger calories and to do a veggie burger comparison.
Red Robin Veggie Burger
My son is a vegetarian. I was ordering a burger from Red Robin (RR) and offered to buy my son a burger. He asked me to wait a few minutes while he checked the hamburger calories. I was astounded when my son told me the RR veggie burger nutrition facts (pg 4) for one RR veggie burger:
- Calories- 1200
- Fat Calories-780
- Total Fat-87 g.
- Saturated Fat- 16 g.
- Trans Fat-1 g.
I couldn’t find the ingredients of the RR veggie burger, but without knowing what the ingredients are, I would not order any sandwich with 1200 calories, 87 g. of fat, and 16 g. of saturated fat. Simply put, I consider those nutrition facts too high in fat. Needless to say, my son didn’t order anything.
Hamburger Calories Comparison – “Keep It Simple” Red Robin Burger
I ordered a regular burger, the “Keep It Simple“ RR burger. Here are the hamburger calories and the nutritional comparison between the RR veggie burger and the “Keep it Simple” RR burger.
- Calories- 640 (compare to 1200 calories – almost half the calories of the RR veggie burger)
- Calories from Fat- 300 (compare to 780 calories – less than half of the RR veggie burger)
- Total Fat- 34 g. (compare to 87 g. – less than half again)
- Saturated Fat- 11 g. (5 g. less than the RR veggie)
- Trans Fat- 1 g. (same)
Check Hamburger Calories Before Ordering
If you think you are eating healthier with lower calories when ordering a veggie burger, I highly recommend stopping to check the veggie burger nutrition facts before placing your order. In my opinion, the RR regular hamburger I ordered was a much healthier choice than the RR veggie burger.
Burger King Veggie Burger w/o mayo comparison to Red Robin Veggie Burger
- Calories- 310 (almost 75% less than RR veggie)
- Calories from Fat- 60 (720 calories less than RR veggie)
- Total Fat- 7 g. (80 g. less than RR veggie)
- Saturated Fat- 1 g. (15 g. less than RR veggie)

My research indicates at this time Burger King (BK) is using MorningStar Farms® Garden Veggie Patty
