My son, Darrell, has mentioned the trials he is enduring currently were chosen by him prior to coming to this earth. He believes and possibly knows he is on the earth letting premortal choices play out to further his growth and development. I believe Darrell; however, I believe only a limited amount of current choices are blocked by prior decisions made with premortal free agency.
Although we also have free agency now, my research indicates we made choices with premortal free agency prior to coming to earth that affects us now.
I located scriptures that support the idea we had premortal free agency prior to coming to earth that affects us now.
Pearl of Great Price Scripture
Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born. Abraham 3:24-25
Doctrine and Covenants Scripture
The following scripture testifies that our premortal choices affect our lives now, and likewise, our choices here will affect our life after death. This follows the law of karma. What we do comes back to bless or curse us. Of course, I believe repentance enables us to change our course at any time by turning and facing God to receive His love.
Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come. D&C 130:18-19
These scripture verses explain that we had premortal free agency to follow Christ or Satan in the preexistence.
And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first. And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him. Abraham 3:22-23, 27-28
Conclusion – Some earthly situations are locked in
So, it is very likely some earthly situations are locked in to teach you and me what we need or desired to attain when we had a full view, while in the presence of God, of what will enable us to grow or expand. Thus at times, even if we pray and pray, and have faith in the desired outcome, the plan and choices that were set in place before we came to earth may trump our “limited vision” desires now.
This is the work of a wise and loving parent to let us struggle so that we may grow in wisdom and intelligence.
